The first female speaker of the South African Parliament dies

Former journalist and anti-apartheid activist Frene Ginwala, president of South Africa's first democratically elected National Assembly and the first woman to hold the post, recently died at the age of 90, the South African Presidency announced. Frene Ginwala died at her home, having suffered a stroke two weeks earlier.

"We mourn the death of a formidable patriot", said the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, adding that "we have lost another great figure of a special generation of leaders to whom we owe our freedom and to whom we owe our commitment to continue building South Africa to which they dedicated everything”, added the Head of State.

Frene Ginwala was appointed President of the National Assembly in 1994, when Nelson Mandela was elected President, marking the end of the apartheid regime. He held office until 2004. “Many of the material rights and benefits that South Africans enjoy today are rooted in the legislative program of the first Parliament.

"South Africa has lost another bulwark of the [liberation] struggle, someone who served Nelson Mandela with distinction in different positions", said in a statement the Foundation that bears the name of the former South African President. Frene Noshir Ginwala played the role of President of the National Assembly from 1994 until his retirement in 2004.

Born in 1932, in Johannesburg, she graduated in Law at the University of London, United Kingdom, where she also obtained a PhD in History from the University of Oxford, having played various roles in the fight against the 'apartheid' regime, as a lawyer , academic, political leader, activist and journalist.
