The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) praised Cape Verde's leadership in agriculture, even with water scarcity, noting that this has contributed to the improvement of food security in the country.

"In all of Africa, Cape Verde is a leader in terms of agriculture in the context of water scarcity, a leadership that has been building for many years", stressed the FAO representative in the country, Ana Touza, within the scope of the II Forum Conference on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG), held in the city of Praia.
According to the official, this country's leadership has been in terms of drip irrigation, but another innovation is the use of desalinated water, in a project that started in São Domingos, Santiago Island, with support from Hungary.
"And also the use of wastewater. All of these are innovations", stressed the also interim resident coordinator of the United Nations System in Cape Verde, for whom the quantity of vegetables and fruits in the country's markets is the result of all this work by peasants. , producers, the Government, the private sector and international partners.
The impact is on the quality of nutrition, on making food available on Cape Verdean tables, continued the official, who considers that the forum, which will discuss how to provide better quality water and better agriculture, "has everything to do" with food security.
Considering that Cape Verde has a good policy in terms of water management and combating drought, the FAO representative guaranteed, however, that the country is not alone, and that international partners are willing to continue to help in this journey.
