During the Africa Day celebrations at the organisation's headquarters in Addis Ababa, the head of state of Comoros said that during his term at the head of the AU "he will try to convince the G20 counterparts of the urgent need for the African Union to become its full member".

"Through this permanent presence, the AU will have the opportunity to give its opinion on the major economic and financial decisions that concern it", he said.

For him, "it is also in this direction that I reiterate the appeal for reforms that allow our continent to have one or even more permanent seats in the Security Council of the United Nations", aiming to "put an end to the injustice that has always been inflicted" on the continent- cradle of humanity.

Azali Assoumani underlined that the OAU, predecessor of the African Union in 2002, achieved "two major objectives in a particular historical context, namely: the completion of the decolonization of Africa and the end of 'apartheid' in South Africa", but criticized the fact that continue "to exist some injustices".

Even so, he called for the pursuit of "ambitions of unity, peace and development", although Africa continues to face "significant challenges, such as the multiplication of unconstitutional transfers of power in recent years, intra-African conflicts and terrorism.

However, he highlighted positive aspects such as the creation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which, he added, will "become one of the world's largest markets in the coming years".
