Zimbabwe recorded the biggest wheat harvest in 2022, around 375 thousand tons, making the country the biggest agricultural power in Southern Africa.
Economy and Development February 3, 2023
The harvest in 2022 was 13% higher than the previous year, breaking a half-century record. The area sown for wheat increased by 10% and, above all, the State established a policy for the distribution of fertilizers and the purchase of crops through a public body, the Council for the Commercialization of Grains, which won over farmers.
In this way, the country no longer needs to import wheat to meet its needs, saving up to 300 million dollars a year in import costs. The maize sector, the main cereal consumed in the country, is also progressing, but it remains insufficient to satisfy national needs.
