Deputy Minister of Works and Transport, Godfrey Kasekenya, told the Tanzanian Parliament that the negotiations started in March of this year are in advanced stages.
Kasekenya said the two parties had met with potential investors from M/S China Overseas Engineering Group Company (COVEC), who had shown interest in building the bridge.
He added that the outcome of the meeting was still being worked on by both parties in mainland Tanzania and in Zanzibar, recalling that the plan for building the bridge would involve a partnership with the private sector.
The idea for the bridge first came to light in 2020 when some Tanzanians in the diaspora submitted a plan to build a sea bridge to link Unguja Island and Dar es Salaam.
The idea generated debate among the population who argued that it was just a dream, but science and technology proved that the project to build about 50 km of Zanzibar/Dar es Salaam bridge is possible if funds are available.
