Reacting to the UK's new immigration policy, Monaghan said students and their families have made valuable contributions to the UK, contributing £40 billion to the economy in 2022.

According to that UK legislator, international students enrich British society, because they have useful skills in key sectors.

"The UK is short of workers in key sectors, and foreign students enrich society with skills that have proven to be vital in the post-Brexit climate", he added, adding that "many students who come to the UK look beyond their studies and want their families to be part of their experience".

"Without a way for international students to bring their families, many will choose to go elsewhere and any drop in international student numbers will further damage universities that are already struggling financially".

However, UK Universities have also opposed the country's new immigration policy, as is the case with the Universities of the United Kingdom (UUK), a body of universities that says the change was a threat to the country's overall success as one of main destinations for international talent, according to its director, Jamie Arrowsmith.

"International students make an invaluable contribution to our universities and the UK economy," said Jamie Arrowsmith.
