Rhinos in the hands of Namibian hunters

At least 87 rhinos died at the hands of poachers in Namibia in 2022, the highest annual number recorded in this African country, according to the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism of Namibia.

It details that of the dead animals, 61 rhinos were black and 26 were white, most of which belong to the Etosha National Park (north), one of the largest on the continent.

In previous years, Namibia recorded 45 rhino poached in 2021, 43 in 2020, 61 in 2019, 84 in 2018 and 55 in 2017, ministry spokesman Romeo Muyunda said.

He adds that poachers are looking for rhino horns, sold mainly in Asian markets such as China, where they are attributed healing and aphrodisiac properties, or Vietnam, where they are displayed as a symbol of wealth.
