Lothar Matthäus, a former German international and Ballon d'Or winner, has become co-owner of Ghanaian football club Accra Lions, and hopes the club will serve as a conduit for European clubs.

Founded in 2015 and from Ghana's top flight, the Accra Lions are valued at $2 million by Transfermarkt, although details of Matthäus' personal investment level have not been released.
Lothar Matthäus, currently a television commentator, together with business partners Oliver König, former agent for German players, and former Ghanaian international Frank Acheampong, are committed to developing talent in Africa and opening up a route to Europe for young players .
"We want to bring young players to Europe who are serious and already well trained," said the former Bayern Munich star.
