Ghana overtook Côte d'Ivoire in cocoa production in the 2022/23 crop year, according to the latest Cocoa Market Report from the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO).

In March 2023, cumulative cocoa bean arrivals in Côte d'Ivoire were below previous season levels, while the volume of graded and sealed cocoa beans purchased in Ghana since the start of the 2022/23 season was reported at 566,846 tonnes , representing an increase of 18% over the previous year.

Despite the increase in Ghana's cocoa production, the total supply of cocoa beans from the world's two largest cocoa producers for the first half of 2022/23 is estimated at 2,345,846 tonnes swt – slightly down 0.2% in comparison with the previous season.

The report noted that the current situation is subject to change as the mid-season progresses. However, the current situation shows that Ghana has overtaken Cote d'Ivoire in cocoa production, a significant development in the global cocoa market.
