At least 19 countries are interested in joining the emerging market bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS), which will meet in Cape Town from 2 to 3 June to discuss enlargement.

According to Anil Sooklal, South African ambassador to the group, "what will be discussed is the expansion and the modalities of how this will happen", he said.
“Thirteen countries have formally asked to join and another six have asked informally. We are getting applications to join every day," added Sooklal.
China started the conversation about expansion when it was president of the BRICS last year, as the world's second-largest economy tries to build diplomatic leverage to counter the dominance of developed countries at the United Nations.
The proposed expansion has raised concern among other members that its influence will be diluted, especially if Beijing's close allies are admitted.
China's gross domestic product is more than twice the size of all four other BRICS members combined.
In addition to composition, they will also discuss “hot spots” including the armed conflict in Sudan.
Since its formation in 2006, the BRICS has only admitted one new member, with the entry of South Africa in 2010. Saudi Arabia and Iran are among the countries that formally requested to join.
